An HDTV tuner is a receiver that decodes signal transited in one of the ATSC formats that are designed to be used to define the standards for High Definition Television. These devices decode signals and convert them so they can be displayed in a monitor either a computer or a High Definition Television set. IT can receive on air broadcasts that are transmitted by local TV stations or cable sources that are in fact transmitted using unencrypted QAM formats.
Tuners that are built with that computer mind are very different from those that are built for television sets. The ones that are built for television sets are commonly referred to as set top boxes or just receivers and may be even be built in the television set itself depending in that model in question. And like the name implies are boxes similar to what a cable receiver would look like in appearance while those designed with a computer in mind can vary from PCI cards which are used for desktop computers and are connected in PCI slots in the PC's motherboard or USB sticks that are preferred for laptop users and are relatively small making them travel friendly.
It is important to know that tuners are not necessary to watch High Definition television if you are subscribed to Dish Network, Direct TV or mostly any digital paid service. In fact they are really useful when it comes to receiving free broadcasts or recording them if the function is built as with some HDTV television sets. In summary the use of these devices is somewhat limited when we compare the circumstances when you may need one and when you may not.
If in fact you buy a High Definition television set that has one built in you just saved yourself some trouble and perhaps some money. It is still worth keeping in mind that for on air local channels transmitted in High Def a tuner is a must, and if it has recording features it can really save you from missing your favorite shows so never underestimate the importance of an HDTV tuner in your home theater or as part of your computer's accessories. They can be real life savers for any television enthusiast.
